The surprises are still going strong! Philadelphia won the National League Wild Card Series over St. Louis, then defeated the defending champion Atlanta Braves in four games to advance to the National League Championship Series. The Padres did the same thing, to be fair.
San Diego defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, the finest club in baseball, in the NL Wild Card Series to beat them and proceed to the NL Championship Series. Who could have imagined? Most likely not many.
Who then has the upper hand? It’s pretty difficult to say, though. It doesn’t matter that neither team took first place in its division. Both teams are capable of winning this series since they both hit their stride at the ideal time. In the regular season, the Phillies did defeat the Padres four out of the seven occasions, but is it really significant? In reality, no, especially given the small sample size.
Let’s compare and contrast the two before I respond. Although both offenses are capable of making a direct impact, Philadelphia does boast a somewhat superior attack and a more diverse lineup. In addition to having the top playoff hitter in Bryce Harper, the Phillies have also scored the most runs thus far in this postseason.
In four of their six playoff games, the Phillies have scored at least six runs, and between games three and four, they have scored a total of 17 runs. With three home runs and three doubles in the postseason, Harper is tied for first among all batters in terms of batting average (.435), hits (10) and OPS (1.437).
